The pattern that you choose will impact how the overall room looks. If you select the herringbone or diagonal pattern, it will make the entire room look different than the basic straight layout. Diagonal Layout

In a diagonal layout, the flooring planks are installed parallel to each other, but laid at a 45-degree angle to the walls. Changing up the flooring patterns by installing the planks at an angle and not straight, showcases the style and looks more elegant. The beauty of your hardwood floors will be showcased in a diagonal pattern and brings a wow-factor to the room! This custom look is generally more expensive in labor because it takes longer to install and requires more product. The maintenance of special patterned floors is the same as basic patterned hardwood floors.  

Herringbone & Chevron Layout

In a Chevron pattern, the hardwood planks are installed where the boards meet in a perfect point like a long string of arrows, while herringbone boards look slightly staggered. Hardwood flooring patterns are laid in a diagonal, zigzag pattern resembling twilled fabric. Herringbone/Chevron floors have been popular in Europe for hundreds of years. Straight Layout

The most common installation pattern is straight. With the length or width of the room, hardwood flooring boards are installed parallel to each other. The straight installation will allow the beauty of the hardwood boards to be appreciated but is also the least expensive to install. More specific patterns like diagonal and herringbone are more costly to install because they take more time to install and require more wood.
