A big misconception in the design industry is that a small room should be painted white in order to visually appear bigger; however, if you enjoy vibrant or dark hues, there are ways to use it in a small room so that it does not overwhelm the space. Any color can work in your small bedroom. Since it is a personal space and an area of the home that you will no doubt be spending a lot of time in, it is essential to paint it a color that you love.

The Dark Side

When executed properly, rich and dark colors can actually distract from the size of a small bedroom. Be sure to stick with hues that make you feel cozy, and create a soothing, intimate space. Even deep colors like red can work within a smaller space.

If you are set on taking a walk on the dark side, you should make sure you to paint the right surfaces the darker hue.  In a small room, you should coat the longest wall with your favorite deep hue.  If you are concerned with still being able to create a light, airy feeling, try leaving the window walls and the shortest walls neutral colors. The longest walls can have the darker hue combined with the lighter colored walls will create an elegonated feel.

When using blues, greens, and other deep neutral shades, try using various shades of the color throughout the bedroom. By giving the space a monochromatic effect, you keep the design from looking choppy and create a unified look.

Light is Right

Neutral and earthy tones are a popular choice for small bedrooms. If you prefer paler shades, colors such as pale blue, peachy tones and yellow are great options for wall color. The good thing about neutral shades is that it makes the walls visually recede into the background which makes the room appear bigger than it actually is. But do not opt for stark white because the bedroom will feel cold and uninviting. Instead, steer towards more creamy or vanilla shades of white.
