Space Saving Lighting Tips

Lighting is one of the most important, if not the most important, design elements in a home. Properly lighting a room can change the look and feel of everything in the room. Sometimes we are limited with floor space and table lamps and floor lamps are not the ideal lighting options. For these rooms and pass through spaces like foyers and hallways, moving the lighting up onto the walls and ceiling is ideal.

Track lighting on the ceiling has come in and out of fashion for interior design.  Old track lighting had large light cans that could be intrusive to the room’s design. Today’s track lighting is much less intrusive with LED and halogen lights than can be very small.  Track lighting is great to highlight art on the walls or provide task lighting.  A track of lighting can be used in a hallway to light art and provide a wash of light down the walls.  It is also good used with a blend of lighting options to create zones of lighting in a larger space.

Another great space saving light is the wall sconce.  Traditionally found in hallways, bathrooms, dining rooms and around fireplaces, wall sconces can create pools of light on the wall and the floor below.  If you don’t have the space for a bedside table or hall table to hold a lamp, a wall sconce can be used to provide light. Wall sconces and a pretty runner can decorate an otherwise ignored hallway to make it feel pulled together and polished.
