Should I Paint the Ceiling?

Does your ceiling need some creative attention? You cannot forget about the fifth wall. As one-sixth of the space in the room, the ceiling rarely gets anything but a coat of white paint. For years, white paint on the ceiling has been a staple in home design because it is considered the best and safest choice. While there are times when a white ceiling is ideal based on the room’s decor, in other instances, the ceiling provides the perfect opportunity to add some drama to the space.

Light vs. Dark

If you have decided to take a walk on the wild side by painting the ceiling, you will have to choose between a light or dark hue. Using a color that is lighter than the walls will add more visual depth, making the room feel airier while using a darker ceiling color to create an intimate feeling.

White vs. Neutrals

White or neutral hue ceilings are often best because it allows more emphasis to be placed on the furnishing in the room, and it accentuates the wall color. Neutral hues, offset intense colors. Therefore, if you have a bold color on all four walls, you might want to stick to a neutral-base ceiling. In fact, it makes the wall appear more crisp and sharp.

Minimum Natural Lighting

In a room that does not get much natural lighting, a white ceiling will reflect available lighting, providing more illumination. Remember, that white ceiling needs other elements to add a sense of warmth to the space. We suggest woodwork, textured carpets, and even your window treatments can be the missing link to balancing out the space. However, if you are going to stick with a white ceiling scheme, be sure to avoid stark white coats. Opt for whites with warm undertones.

Contrasting with Dark Colors

Using a contrasting color on the ceiling will instantly add drama to the room. It also changes the perception of space because the light will pick up the ceiling color and bounce it around the room. When applying a dark contrasting color, apply the base first and a glaze of the same color over the coat to soften the effect.
