How to choose a Hardwood Floor Color

12312246_SWhether you inherit a hardwood floor when you buy a home, or whether you get to pick your hardwood floor color, you will live with the color of your floors for quite some time. There are several things that you should keep in mind before picking a color, or deciding to sand and restain your floors.

Your room size, the height of your ceilings, your wall colors and your furniture should be a primary consideration before picking anything. You want everything to complement each other and not clash.

Dark colored floors can make a room look cozy and more formal, but if you have dark colored floors and dark colored walls it will make a room look small and gloomy. Keep in mind that dark colored floors will show every bit of dog hair, dust and dirt. If you don’t feel like vacuuming your floors every day, a dark hardwood floor color may not be for you.

If you have a small room with low ceilings, light colored floors are a better option. Light colored floors will also conceal scratches, dents and dust much better than dark colored floors.

Come into the store and get floor samples. Just like picking a paint color and pinning it to your wall, nothing is better than seeing in natural light what your floor will look like.

And also remember that you don’t want your furniture and your floors to be the exact same color. You want a little contrast.

Now go choose that color!
