Firework Safety for Pets

July 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed. Today we celebrate this holiday of freedom with fun activities, food and drinks, time with our loved ones, and fireworks. With all our loved ones being included in festivities, it is natural for us to want our pets to tag along for the day. However, this holiday may not be the best occasion to take out your animals. Massive celebratory explosions and furry little friends do not mix well. Here are some safety guidelines to keep in mind for your pets this holiday season

Prevent Your Dogs from Running Away

Many animals can become easily frightened by loud explosions, and this is when their fight-or-flight instinct may kick in on your dogs or cats. To prevent your pet from running away, it is best to keep them indoors on the 4th. Fireworks are typically at night, but you are never sure when local neighbors may decide to celebrate. The loud explosion could spook your furry friend and have them run or even become hostile towards people outside (even if it is not typical for them). You may want to put on the television or radio in your house during firework hours to help prevent the sudden spook as well. With noise continuing throughout the show, your dog or cat may be less frantic to the loud explosions.

Early Morning Adventures

If you do decide to spend some time with your dog today, go on an early morning adventure. You can wear out your pup before the day begins. This can lower their anxiety later in the day during the firework show. Make sure to keep your dog hydrated in the summertime’s blistering heat conditions, as well.

Fireworks at Home

Be very cognitive if you do fireworks at home. Just lighting a firework may spark your dogs’ interest. Some dogs have even grabbed fireworks before they launch, and this can be extremely dangerous and fatal. Keep your dogs and cats inside during the fireworks.
