Creative At-home Kid Birthday Parties

22427740_SInstead of a typical birthday celebration at the local fun center, why not host your child’s birthday party at home? Your kiddo will be able to invite more pals and you’ll have more control of the situation. Create a fun, festive environment with these birthday party ideas.

Cooking show

Have a budding chef on your hands? Create a food show-inspired environment for little ones. This is perfect if you have a large kitchen. Older children can participate in a “secret ingredient” cook-off between teams. Let the birthday kid be the judge! Younger kids might enjoy a make-your-own pizza activity. Set up mini rounds of dough and plenty of toppings and let the kids go crazy. Don’t forget to film the activity to watch later.

Crafternoon

Gather the kids in the garage or basement for an afternoon of glue, glitter and construction paper. Paper crowns would be adorable on little party-goers. Pom poms, gems, stickers and other supplies can be affixed to pre-cut paper crowns. Assemble the royal court for a festive photo while the kids enjoy birthday cake.

Movie night

Put your home theater to good use with a themed movie night. Elementary-aged children will delight in a movie sing-along with traditional movie candy and popcorn; older children might like a sports-themed movie with tailgate-inspired snacks. Put large pillows or even a mattress on the floor for more comfortable seating.

Food fight

This might require a bit more planning for both children and parents.  However, what kid wouldn’t love to get messy with a good old-fashioned food fight? Tape or stake tarps and plastic painting sheets to your lawn. Add large plastic bowls filled with messiest, but soft foods (think cooked spaghetti, whipped cream, pudding and mashed potatoes). This is the perfect opportunity to smash a piece of cake on your birthday kid’s face! Hose them off before the party heads inside and of course make sure the all of the kids’ parents know beforehand.

An at-home birthday party can be just as fun as more elaborate activities. Bring the party home with a creative theme your child will enjoy.
