Complete a Fireplace Refresh

Whether you use the fireplace as a heat source or simply a decorative element in your home, chances are it could use a mini-makeover. A few small tweaks can help your fireplace be the focal point of your living space.

Paint the brick

If your fireplace has a brick-surround, the easiest way to refresh is a bright, white coat of paint. First wipe down the brick with a vinegar and water solution. After the brick is dry, you can start painting. Keep in mind that brick is porous and might need several coats. Stone can also be painted to achieve a similar look.

Add a mantle

Maybe your fireplace is missing a mantle; now is a perfect time to add one. A mantle can widen the visual space the fireplace occupies, creating a focal point above the fireplace. Think of all the treasures you could display once the mantle is in place. Be sure to install into brackets or studs for the most secure fit. Additionally, built-in bookcases can be added on either side to further fill out the space.

Replace old tile

The tiled outer hearth can also be updated for a fresh look. If the tile extends further up the wall, you can also replace that tile. Modern glass tiles or even a patterned herringbone design would update an otherwise outdated fireplace.

Accessorize

If you have a nonworking fireplace, consider filling it with candles, faux-logs or even shelves for book storage. For working fireplaces, a log basket off to the side will add woodsy charm. Don’t forget the tools! Fire pokers and brooms can be placed in a sturdy vase, or placed on whimsical hooks next to the fireplace.
