The Allure of the Sale

Sometimes a sale seems too good to pass up.  This is true for fashion as well as home purchases.  That cashmere sweater that is two sizes too big but is marked down 80% might be tempting because it is such a good deal. The same is true for the sofa floor model that is now 60% off and can be delivered tomorrow.  It is easy to get caught up in the idea of a bargain, but when it comes to buying for our homes, it is important to do your homework before you impulse buy.

The area rug that is marked down on clearance might appear to be a great deal until you get it home and realize that it is too big, too small, or just not the right color for the room.  Check with the retailer to see if sale and clearance items can be returned before you buy.  If you are ordering custom furniture on sale, you probably will not be able to return it without incurring a penalty and restocking fee.

Sometimes sales can work in your favor. You might score the perfect chair, rug or curtains for a room at a fantastic price.  Arming yourself with measurements is a must before you head out to the sales.  Write them down or make a note in your phone so you’ll have it no matter where or when you decide to go browsing. Make a book with paint, fabric and upholstery samples from your home and carry it with you when shopping will help you know if the bargain purchase will work with your existing décor. This way you’ll be prepared to seize the day and take advantage of the sales.
